Subject: Filmed 1948, narration revised
This film, dated 1948 has a later narration that refers to Alaska as a new state. Statehood was approved in July 1958 but did not become official until January 1959. So assuming the reason for revision of this film was Alaska statehood I would assume the narration is from late 1958 or 1959.

As a child in the 60s, we would have "film day" and these kinds of films were the meal of the day. Watching this took me back to that great feeling I had when the teacher said it was film day.
Also, I was riveted when they showed places the way they looked back then and many of them I know firsthand what they look like today.
Many of them I recognized, and I especially got a chuckle out of Fairbanks and UAA Fairbanks. The college kids walking up the steps.
The construction reminded me of Alaska through and through...the home I love.
We Alaskans spend the whole summer on construction projects that end up sitting in part through the winter, only to start up again when we can.
Great film for someone like myself.

This 50s geography film about Alaska contains interesting historical footage of what the state looked like back then, as well as some funky topographic maps that look like they were made out of plasticene. Other than that, it's pretty ordinary.
Ratings: Camp/Humor Value: **. Weirdness: **. Historical Interest: ****. Overall Rating: ***.

Subject: So So.
A more simplified overview of what Alaska has to offer. (A much better film is Alaska's Silver Millions) Film briskly goes over many points, carefully to point out the New Alaska first, with it's farming, fishing and transportation benefits, and THEN briskly go over Eskimo life. Interesting to see the ramshackle structures of the University, which looks hopelessly unstable. Film ends on a hopeful note, as the music swells and the narrator says to look out for the Youth in Alaska, who will lead the way.
